You may have noticed that more and more people are learning how to deal with their depression. You will notice that until they do deal with the depression, your work life can be hell. You don't want to have your live disrupted just because of someone else's failures or feelings. You will want to focus on the real issues at hand so that you can focus and excel at your ability to work. You will find that when it comes to dealing with depressed people that you can do several of the following things to make work seem more bearable for you.
First, you may just want to think about how serious the situation is. If it is serious, you will want to go to your superior right away. This means that you will want to bring the depression to other people's attention so that they can get the help that they need to work. You will find that if it is not affecting you, then you really don't have any right to complain. They don't have to be happy just to suit you. There are tons of people who come in and have a bad day every now and then and you'll need to allow the day to progress and the depression will naturally go away. You may also want to ask yourself if the depression is affecting you so that you can understand why you feel the need to help others feel better. You will want to learn how to avoid of the issues that co-workers have; like fights and arguments, so that you can have the best experiences with your co-workers.
You should also keep in mind that this person might be dealing with a lot right now and you interfering will only make things worse. Most of the time you will not have too much contact with a person. If his or her depression brings you down, you should know that you don't have to talk to anyone about anything. You will be able to completely shut off any and all contact (by choice). That makes a whole lot of difference, however, if it is someone that you have to have constant contact with, you may want to talk to them about their issues so that they can feel better and you can work hard and focused.
If you are thinking about communicating with your co-workers you may want to think about the words that you might choose. First, you should never say "You". When you speak to someone and you use that word, you are only going to put them on the defensive, and that is not the goal of communication. Communication is where you can get understanding and feel comfortable with the people who are around you and also begin to understand your co-workers. Communication will also allow you to see yourself. Maybe the whole problem is not just them, but a bit of it could be just your insecurities and feelings popping up. It is important that you get to know your co-workers so that you can show them some compassion and understanding when it comes to all of the hard times that life deals out.
It is important that you get to understand this person so that you don't feel bad about how you feel. When you know what is going on with a co-worker you will feel like you can talk to them about some of your issues, but also communicate some of the issues that you may have with other people. You will find that your co-workers can be a great help and support system (if only you will allow them to be a support system for you.
